Vikos Gorge & Vikos National Park

Perched in the North Pindus, Vikos Gorge is an impressive mountainous area with breathtaking background and unique vistas. It is also ideal for summer excursions as the temperature remains low through the forest, making it possible to cross the Gorge even on the warmest days of the year. Vikos Gorge is also 12-kilometres long, while it is located 30 km away from Ioannina. 

Acheron Springs

Just 2 km away from the village of Glyki in Epirus lies this magnificent spectacle of nature, the so-called Acheron Springs. This mythical river, which the ancient Greeks believed that was the place where inhabited the souls of the dead while was also the road that led to Hades, is a place of unique ecological interest. The stunning mountains that rise all around, the lush nature and the crystal clear waters of the river create a scenery of outstanding natural beauty. Acheron Springs is also offered for several sports and activities such as canoeing, kayaking and horseback riding. 

Lake Pamvotida

Pamvotida, also known as Pamvotis Lake, is the precious gem of Ioannina. Is a charming 8-kilometre lake which adorns the lakeside area of ​​the city, giving a romantic atmosphere to the surroundings. The views are also incredible, overlooking the impressive mountain of Mitsikeli. You can enjoy a lovely stroll along the lake, admiring from the one side the beautiful views of the lake and the surrounded mountains, and on the other side, the astonishing Castle of Ioannina and the Ottoman monuments as well. Do not miss also taking a boat ride to the unnamed island of Ioannina, commonly known as Ali Pasha Island. 

Epirus Alpine Zone

For nature lovers, the so-called alpine zone is among the best things to do in Epirus. Spectacular dragon lakes (drakolimnes) lie in the heart of Pindus mountain range creating a unique backdrop of extraordinary beauty. As if they emerged from a fairytale, these alpine lakes are characterized by frozen surfaces during winter while they give a unique rejuvenating setting during the summer months.

Zagorochoria

Last but not least, if you ever visit Epirus, the famous Zagorochoria should definitely be on your bucket list. In fact, Zagorochoria are 44 villages of the Zagori region in Epirus known for their traditional character and the distinct architecture. Hidden among the lush nature of Vikos National Park, these picturesque villages boast remarkable views over the mountainous landscape of Epirus. Zagorochoria is also an ideal destination for a short winter excursion up to the mountains, especially if you need rest and want to get away from everyday life. Among them, the most popular are Vitsa, Papingo, Ano Pedina and Aristi.
