The best way to get to Crete is by plane. In fact, there are two international airports in Crete: the Nikos Kazantzakis Airport Heraklion (HER) and the Daskalogiannis Airport Chania (CHQ). Both serve domestic as well as international flights, from Athens, Thessaloniki and direct flights from several European countries. Especially during the summer months, there are frequent daily flights from Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH) to Chania or Heraklion respectively. The duration from/to Athens from/to Chania or Heraklion Crete is about one hour. 

By sea

There is also another one way to get to Crete, by sea. You can take the ferry from Athens Piraeus Port to Chania or Heraklion. Especially during summer, there are several ferries that depart daily from Athens to Crete. Depending on the ferry, the duration may vary from 6-12 hours.
